It’s not difficult, though, but you want to be familiar with it, so, the next steps in the red ring of death repair process will go as planned.
Red Ring Of Death Step-By-Step Fix
Let’s pick up on what’s we have left-off from the disassembling process. From there, we have removed the duct for the fan, the fan itself and the DVD or optical drive. Next…
Remove The Motherboard
Remove the X-Clamp Holding The Heatsink
Once you’ve lifted the motherboard from the casing, turn it upside down and use a screw driver to remove the X-Clamps holding the Xbox 360 CPU heatsink. Be gentle when doing the removal, so that nearby SMD or surface mounted component near the X-Clamps lock won’t be snap.
After the X-Clamps are unscrewed or unlocked, it will allow the heatsink to be taken off from the CPU. Gently lift it up until it is completely removed, exposing the CPU or XBox processor.
Clean the CPU or Processor and The GPU chips
Once, the heatsink is removed exposing the CPU and GPU, remove and clean the old thermal paste. Wipe it out gently, so that all those old thermal paste will be removed. This is crucial as a new thermal paste will be applied here once it is cleaned.
Thermal paste is very important as this will provide heat transfer from the CPU to the heatsink, thus preventing the overheating of CPU. This is the number reason why red ring of death happens, when the thermal paste isn’t good anymore and cannot efficiently transfer heat from the CPU towards the heatsink.
Use an Arctic Cleaner for cleaning up the old thermal paste.
Now that the old thermal paste are completely cleaned, apply new and fresh thermal paste. Use Arctic Silver thermal paste, I find it more effective than the other thermal paste. There are other thermal paste also, use what’s available to you, just make sure it’s good and don’t easily wear out.
Let the Arctic thermal paste or compound to set for at least 2 to 3 minutes. Make sure you spread it evenly over the chip’s surface. Don’t apply too much, just a small amount. Put small amount in the center of the chip and then using your finger or you can use a plastic to protect your finger and evenly spread it the thermal compound.
Putting/Re-assembling Back The Heatsink
Now, it’s time to put back the heatsink. But, before putting or installing it back to the Xbox 360 CPU… make sure it’s surface is free from the old thermal paste as well. This needs to be cleaned just like what was done to the CPU.
Once, it’s cleaned and ready… re-install it back towards the CPU. Make sure the X-Clamps are properly snap into place. This is important, we want it to be at its permanent place, so that, the contact between the heatsink and the CPU are appropriate making heat transfer very efficient.
Putting All Back Together
Now that all are re-assembled, the next step to do is testing. Provided all the steps are followed well, the red ring of death will now be gone. All you have to do now is start playing your game again.
